“Do not restrict your service within certain limits. Be alert to the call everywhere, at all times; be ready with a smile, a kind word, a useful suggestion, some knowledgeable care, a pleasant reply. Look for chances to relieve, rescue or resuscitate. Train yourselves so that you may render help quickly and well ” -Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba directed the All India President of the SSSSO, India in the year 2002 to train the Sevadal (volunteers) in Disaster Management (DM). The same year in many states of India, the Disaster Management Team was formed with proper training. The module was created purely based on practical knowledge which was learnt over past 25 years during flash floods in West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Earthquake in Gujarat & Maharashtra, Landslides in North East States, later on Tsunami, Thane Cyclone in Tamil Nadu and many more. SSSSO, India is in fact the first and foremost organisation to reach in Tsunami hit areas and managed in disastrous situation. After Bhagawan’s samadhi, when disaster relief activities were carried out during the Thane cyclone, the beneficiaries lovingly said “We were told that BABA left His Physical form, No…. we are really seeing the same SAI BABA through the Sai members who were doing the seva at right time at highly affected area.”
The most important service was the Kerala Flood rescue, relief, and sanitation. With the Divine grace of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, DM team Kerala and Tamil Nadu undertook rescue and relief activities at various places in Kerala affected by the unprecedented floods in August 2018. They formed five teams for the entire operation. The entire operation was carried out as a team effort and in coordination with guidance of the office bearers of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations of both Kerala and Tamilnadu. Sanitation service is one of the very essential service done by the DM Team, especially Tamil Nadu Virudunager. They completely cleaned few houses and did the required sanitation services. The goal of the DM team is to create an innovative and improvised method of handling the DM operations. Such thought process gave an idea to create a victim carrying vehicle with the support of two cycles, which was very affectionately, praised by the NDRF Chief too.
The various modules of training offered by the Disaster Management team are
Sri Sathya Sai Seva organisations, Andhra Pradesh, conducts a two day session for disaster management training in various parts of the state. It helps candidates to gain an insight and to acquire knowledge about various disasters that can occur (both natural and human-made) and how one can deal with them. The session consists of both theory and practical.
The theory session involves information about the types of disasters and the ways to manage them. In the practical session, attendees were taught how to make nine different types of knots which would be useful during crisis periods. They were also shown some videos on floods and were taught some rescue methods like how to lift people, how to make chairs with the hands, how to make stretchers and so on.
